Brenda Berkman began producing stone lithographs in 2008, but she did not make any art connected to 9/11 or the World Trade Center until ten years after the fall of the Twin Towers. In 2011, she explored her experiences through the medium of printmaking. In this lithographic self-portrait titled 2001, Berkman depicts herself bending over, covering her head as if under attack from above. On the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Berkman organized a collaborative art project with thirteen other artists based upon this self-portrait. Titled 9/11 Decade, each artist contributed their personal responses to the events of September 11, 2001 in the form of a monoprint. Berkman created nine prints while the participating artists contributed eleven (two worked in pairs). Showcased together, the exhibition was a symbolic reference to the events of that day.
