Joan Root was born in 1944, and lived in New York for the majority of her career before moving to Washington, D.C. Root describes her art as “Contemporary Classicism.” It has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and Europe, as well as being housed in a number of museums such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Portland Museum of Art. In 2011, she had a solo show at the Arts Club of Washington. She has three graduate degrees: she received her M.A. in Art Education from City College of New York; her Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Art History from American University; and her M.A. in Printmaking and Italian Renaissance and Art History from Villa Schifanoia/Dominican University in Florence, Italy.
With her education she has gone on to become not only a lauded printmaker and printmaker, but also a teacher of painting and drawing as well as art history. During her time in New York, “she taught at The New York Academy of Art, The School for Visual Arts, Stern College and New York University.  In Washington, she has been on the faculty of the Corcoran College of Art, Northern Virginia Community College and American University.  In 2000, she spent four months as a Visiting Artist at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hanoi, Vietnam.” Root has also lectured at the Smithsonian Institute (among others) and led art history tours with them through various parts of Europe and the United States.
