Michael Kessler was born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, in 1954. He received his BFA from Kutztown University in 1978, and has since pursued a career as a painter. Kessler also attended the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1977 until 1978. His works are non-objective, although they often blend biomorphic elements with the geometric; he takes much inspiration from nature, be it form or color. During 1991, Kessler spent his time in Italy after winning the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome in 1990, after which he became involved with large, site-specific installations. In 1992, he won the Pollock-Krasner Award in painting. He currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
