Graham Stanton “Stan” Frear was born in Columbia, Missouri, in 1922. He grew up in Michigan and then later in Minnetonka, Minnesota. He attended St. Olaf College and graduated in 1947 with degrees in biology and English, along with teaching certificates for secondary schools. For post-graduate and doctoral work, Frear attended the University of Minnesota.

Although Frear was primarily a teacher and professor, he had always had a passion for art. He started out painting land and seascapes from Lake Superior’s northern shore, along with English and Irish countryside scenes. His most widely distributed works were his construction collage boxes, many of which can be seen in Northfield, Minnesota, and across the country. Frear died in 2014.
