Meg Ojala is a photographer who has spent most of her life in Minnesota. She received her BA at the University of Minnesota and continued her education to receive her MFA at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. For 35 years, Ojala taught photography in St. Olaf and also spearheaded the construction of the first darkroom in the college. Subject matter that interests Ojala the most is the idea of space and place and how a location can be significantly altered through a photograph. One of her bodies of work examines the many aspects of a bog, down from the reflections in the water to the minute flowers on branches. Through her eyes, the resulting interpretation of her surroundings are otherworldly and full of wonder in its abstraction. A location that Ojala has recently frequented for her photographs is the banks of the Cannon River near her home in Dundas, Minnesota. Ojala’s work has also aided in conservation efforts and has been exhibited in the International Center of Photography, New York City and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
