Mary Griep is a Northfield, Minnesota, based artist. She earned her BA from Macalester College, and later her MA from Hamline University. From 1992 until 2017, Griep taught drawing at St. Olaf College as well as serving as the Associate Dean of Fine Arts. In addition to this, she has been an artist-in-residence in Thailand, the Dominican Republic, Minnesota, and at various other locations.
One of her largest projects, the Anastylosis Project, has been in progress since 1998. Through this project, Griep explores the many layers of sacred spaces, such as the Mayan Palace of the Governors (Mexico) and the Basilica of San Marco of Venice (Italy), by compressing the structures on paper. As of 2019, Griep has created thirteen works in this series.
