David Alren Grimsrud was born in Cumberland, Wisconsin, in 1940. His parents, Alton and Janice Grimsrud, owned and operated the Turtle Lake Times weekly newspaper. Eventually, the family moved to Zumbrota, Minnesota, where he worked with his father in the newspaper and print shop during high school and in the summer as he earned his BA at St. Olaf College, where he majored in art. He went on to receive his MA in painting from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and then his MFA in graphic design from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Grimsrud taught art at the high school level, but also served as part of the design staff at Indiana Alumni Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Sacred Design Associates, and Dayton’s department store. Grimsrud was the owner and publisher of the News-Record/Zumbro Shopper newspapers from 1981 until 2007. He continues to live and work in Zumbrota.
