Richard Black was born on July 18, 1932 in Farnhamville, Iowa. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Drake University’s Department of Art and Design in 1957, and with a MSAE from the University of Wisconsin in 1958.  Following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin, Black began working as a Professor of Art at the University of Illinois Jacksonville, as well as a Gallery and Education Director at Jacksonville’s David Strawn Art Museum.  In 1960, he left both positions to return to Drake University to teach printmaking.  In addition to teaching, Black founded and organized the Biennial National Print Symposium from 1975-1991.  He remained as a professor at Drake University until his retirement in 1994.  Following his retirement, he returned to Farnhamville, where he continues to make prints.  In 2011 and 2016, he received the Printmaking Today Award from the Royal Society of Painters-Printmakers, of which he is a member.
