Paul Granlund was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1925. After serving in the Army Air Corps during WW II, Granlund went on to receive his BA from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1952. He then attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art, receiving his MFA in 1954. That same year, Granlund received a Fulbright Award to study sculpture, his chosen medium, in Florence, Italy. He would be able to return to Italy in 1957 and 1958 thanks to a Guggenheim award, although both time it was Rome and not Florence.

Throughout the 1960s, Granlund was the head of the sculpture department at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, but by 1971 he had joined the faculty of Gustavus Adolphus. He remained the sculptor-in-residence there until his retirement in 1996. Granlund’s bronze sculptures have been exhibited throughout the United States, and installed worldwide. He passed away in Mankato, Minnesota, in 2003.
