Cándido Bidó was born in Bonao, in the Dominican Republic.  During his 20s, he moved to Santo Domingo to work at the Serafín de Asís Catholic College.  With the support of the nuns there, he enrolled at the National School of Fine Arts, where he studied with Gilberto Hernández Ortega, José Gausachs, Clara Ledesma and Jaime Colson.  There, he also met Elsa Núñez and Leopoldo 'Lepe' Pérez and together formed the art group 'Los Tres' (The Three).  Upon his graduation in 1962, he began teaching at the National School of Fine arts, an additional private academy, and set up a studio in Santo Domingo.  He also worked at the Plastic Art Studio of the air force at some point.  In 1976, Bido founded the Cándido Bidó Art Center in Santo Domingo.  The Art Center closed in 1987, and the same year Bido opened the Cultural Center Plaza in Bonao.

Cándido Bidó died in Santo Domingo of a heart attack at the age of 74, on Monday, March 7, 2011.
