Willem van den Berg was born in Den Haag, Holland, in 1886. His father, Andries van den Berg, was an artist, and Willem followed in his footsteps. Willem studied in Belgium and Paris, and he became a student of the Barbizon school while in France. He is best known for his images of peasants, farmers, and fishermen, but he is also well known for his landscapes and portraiture. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1935, and then in 1940 he became the director of the National Academy of Art in Amsterdam. He continued to paint and exhibit internationally until his death in 1970. Willem’s works can be found in museums across Europe and the United States.
