Mario Avati was born in Monaco to Italian parents in 1921. Avanti studied at both the École des Arts Decoratifs in Nice and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was not until 1947 that he began exploring the etching and aquatint techniques, but by 1957 he had turned fully to mezzotint. During the 1960s, while he was a Fellow at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, he honed his mezzotint craft. He has been regarded internationally as a master of the medium, and his work is included in multiple collections worldwide.
In 1957, he was awarded with the Gold Medal at the First International Exhibition of Graphic Art in Florence, as well as the Prix de la Critique for drawing and printmaking. In 1981, Avati received another Gold Medal at the Grand Prix of Arts of the City of Paris. Because he lived most of his life in Paris, he was a member of the Society of French Painters and Engravers. Avati lived in Paris until his in 2009.
