Emilie Sievert Weinberg was born in Chicago in 1882. She was the daughter of a wealthy clothing manufacturer. When she was a teenager, she began her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Isadore Weinberg in 1906, and they continued to live in Chicago. However, in 1913 she settled in San Francisco and established a home studio. In 1916, she went to New York City to study under William M. Chase, and began to develop a technique utilizing quick brush strokes and rich surfaces. In 1930, she moved to Berkeley in order to study further under Hans Hoffman at the University of California. Weinberg’s early works were often watercolors, but then she switched to working in oils later in her life. Her final move was to Piedmont, where she remained until she died in 1958.
