Stuart Nielsen was born in 1947 in Evanston, Illinois and began his painting career in the 1970s. A significant body of his work consists of paintings created on fiberglass. Nielsen pioneered in the combination of these two mediums. His paintings are usually characterized by their abstraction, patterns and peculiar shapes. As Nielsen’s paintings increased in scale, more opportunities for commissioned works to be displayed in public spaces. By 1979, Nielsen also began to venture into the realm of sculpture. Through collaborating with architects and designers, Nielsen has also incorporated wood, metal and plastic into his artworks.Throughout the years, Nielsen now has 20 sculptures suited to the spaces they are displayed in. Currently, Nielsen has shifted his focus from commissioned artworks and has stayed true to his own style through a return to large paintings.
