Corneliu Vasilescu was born in Barlad, Romania, in 1934. Born to a mother who was a drawing teacher, Vasilescu was introduced to art at an early age. In 1960, he joined the "Nicolae Grigorescu" Institute of Fine Arts, and was noted as being a good designer and colorist. In 1968, he became a member of the Union of Fine Artists. He finished his university studies in 1974, and began to participate in exhibitions. From 1976 until 1979, he was a museographer at the National Office for Documentation and Art Exhibitions. From 1983 onwards, he has served as a visiting professor at the Hoschule in Darmstadt.

Vasilescu is best known for his abstract expressionist artworks. His art has been shown and collected internationally.
