Javier Cabada was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1931. His artistic training began in 1949 when he went to Lima, Peru, to study under Oscar Allain Cotera. He would go on to study at the National School of Fine Arts located there in 1951. In 1961, he relocated to Europe studying first in Dusseldorf, Germany, and then going to Paris, France. Eventually, he went back to Barcelona and began experimenting with portraiture. By 1962, however, he had decided to travel to the United States to study at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. He abandoned his studies there in 1964, going instead to France and Spain. He studied mural painting at the Massana Art School in Barcelona in 1964. Despite never finishing his studies, Cabada landed a teaching job in Washington, DC, in 1965.

Beginning in 1969, Cabada began to have more solo shows for his painting, with the first of these at the Jules Brassner Art Gallery in New York City. The following year, he traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, to hold a solo show at the Royal Fine Arts School; 1971 found him in Paris and New York again. He would continue like this for many years. He gained his American citizenship in 1976, but continues working and exhibiting on an international level.
